.....
I've started with the idea of making a 'his and hers' spoon set, then switched to 'his and his' after 'hers' did not seem to fit. It felt gimmicky and i quit forcing it. I got thinking about other things.
Right now still having trouble deciding how to post these individually. How much to tell and how much to keep to myself...? They are almost too personal but that is not what i want them to be about.

Funny that you should think about gender here. Made me realise that I ‘see’ these spoons as ‘she’s’, rather stereotypically I think, their receptive/vessel nature, that ability to hold, to encompass, but also to emit. And now, seeing these spoons with backs turned (this tendency to anthropomorphise comes too easily!) I think of different things, away from gender: mushrooms with thick white skin, unbaked dough-shapes with strangely stiff protruberances, tea-strainers covered in plaster - making airless insect-traps. They seem to withhold where seen from the front they offer freely. Strange that they should be the same objects. Wonderful too.
ReplyDeleteDo let us know what you think/feel about each one, I would love to hear about it. Don’t fear that it will close down our reaction to your work, these spoons are such strong evocative pieces and can’t be pinned down in any one way. Your thoughts/feelings would add to their life in our minds too.
PS. I’m in suspense after your comment – what did you mean, pray tell.
Waiting patiently...with bated breath...do I dare to comment!
ReplyDeleteThese 'spoons' are beautiful Mien...they evoke feelings...I could describe what I see and feel, but why would I impose, other than to say, it's a joy viewing your work.
i am with marjojo--you are making me want to hear more (though i always wanted to ask questions about the spoons). They are so rounded, too and yes, feminine; but masculine perhaps towards something (someone offered)> Even now i wonder what is to enter a spoon (spooning what lovers do) and breath is my first idea.
ReplyDeleteTalk to us girl. (only if u want to).
For me, they speak quietly but with a deep force. There is a soft energy that flows from them. Vessels meant for ritual. Tell or not tell...they are magical.
ReplyDeletewhat a beautifull work ! i will come back.thank you.
ReplyDeleteoh mien how beautiful they are... and so frail, but they convey also a feeling of deeply hidden strength. I have been thinking a lot about the relationship a spoon establishes between the I and the food, it tells so much about a whole view of the world, I guess. when one compares the universe of the spoon with that of chopsticks, for example. you know, in Japan they have a special pair of teacups, his and her's. but I agree with marjojo, I don't think at all about gender when I see them like this.
ReplyDeleteI just love them so much as a group. It's hard for me to think of them being separated. They seem more like a family to me than his and hers, or his and his... But each one really is so very wonderful. These are fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first visit to your blog. I like what I see, even more what I feel.
